Dermalogica: Products That Promote Health as Well as Beauty
Dermalogica, one of the best-known skin-care lines, was developed at the International Dermal Institute (IDI) in Marina del Rey, California. Jane Wurwand, U.K.-trained therapist, founded the institute in 1983 when she found that serious skin and body education and therapy were virtually unknown in the United States. She opened a small classroom and began teaching American skin therapists to become specialists in innovative skin care. Realizing that no existing company incorporated her personal philosophy of skin care as a health concern, not simply beauty treatments, in 1986 Wurwand developed her own product line that became Dermalogica. What sets these products apart was the fact that they did not contain commonly used ingredients such as artificial colors, SD alcohol, mineral oil and synthetic fragrances, proven to cause breakouts and irritate the skin. The company’s initial products, including Dermal Clay Cleanser, Active Moist, Skin Smoothing Cream, Special Cleansing Gel, and Multi-Active Toner, are still part of the Dermalogica line and are extremely popular. Dermalogica’s products are available in regular sizes and also travel sizes, which are perfect for gym and beach bags as well as packing into toiletry cases.
Dermalogica features four key lines: AGE Smart, ChromaWhite Trx, Medibac Cleaning, and Shave System. Each is designed to address specific skin-care concerns. AGE Smart works to prevent fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and other signs of aging before they even surface. ChromaWhite TRX products include a total daily treatment to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone. Dermalogica Medibac Clearing products are designed to be layered on the skin throughout the day, helping aging, oily, and acne-prone skin. The company’s Shave System works for men and women, offering a smooth shave without irritation while cleansing, exfoliating, shaving, and protecting the skin.
Some of Dermalogica’s most popular products are:
- Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel, which works on all skin types. This soap-free, foaming gel is gentle enough to remove surface toxins and debris while protecting the skin’s natural moisture barrier. Its balm mint base both soothes and cools the face.- Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is a rice-based enzyme powder that works to restore even skin pigmentation while accelerating cell renewal and exfoliating dead cells, so skin looks brighter and feels smoother.
- Dermalogica Age Smart Skin Resurfacing Cleanser cleanses and exfoliates in one step; smoothing the surface of aging skin and helping it retain its moisture. Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser works on oily or acne-prone skin to clean and purify to minimize future breakouts. This cleanser contains bentonite and kaolin clays and astringent plant extracts to eliminate toxins while absorbing excess oil, and soothing and refreshing skin.
- Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner is right for all skin types to refresh, moisturize, and smooth the face’s surface, better preparing it to absorb moisturizer.
- As far as moisturizers are concerned, Dermalogica Active Moist is a lightweight lotion that is oil free and ideal for providing daily moisture without a greasy feel. This lotion will hydrate skin while also soothing and improving its texture.
- For dryer skin, Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream is a moisturizing cream with a bit more weight that calms and hydrates, and at the same time, it reduces free radicals and protects against environmental residues. If your skin has been irritated by sun damage or pollutants, try Dermalogica Soothing Protection Spray, a calming spray that protects the skin from ozone and provides healing, anti-itching, and antioxidant ingredients to lessen inflammation, redness, and discomfort while protecting skin from further damage.
Other products in the Dermalogica line include bar soap, body moisturizers, eye creams and gels, body wash, deodorant, hair care, hand and nail treatments, makeup, and sunscreen.
